Char-forest (文字林, literally "a forest of letters") is a generative video work that reweaves data and texts that have measured and recorded Korean nature into a forest of letters and numerals. Its materials are roughly ten years of temperature, precipitation, wind, pressure, and humidity observations accumulated by the Korea Meteorological Administration's Seoul ASOS station; environmental public data such as street trees, air quality, and administrative records; and footage of Korean landscapes. This forest is not a particular place that exists in reality. It is nature as administration and statistics have described it: nature that exists as figures, classifications, and documents.
The core visual expression of the work is produced by generative software designed by the artist. A large language model (LLM) took part in writing the code, while Cho, rather than drawing forms directly, designs the rules by which data is converted into characters. The light and contours of the landscape footage are translated into the density and size of characters drawn from Hangul, ASCII, and the Latin alphabet, and the distribution and fluctuation of the observations become the rhythm of the screen. Vocabularies of waterways, tree species, terrain, atmosphere, and administration are placed according to position on the screen, so that up close each part of the forest reads as the language that describes that place. The carbon cost of the AI calls made during production is also fed back into the algorithm, inscribing the resources spent in making this forest into the work's visual language.
The screen moves in an irregular rhythm resembling human breathing. Each breath, composed of inhalation, pause, exhalation, and rest, varies in length and depth. With every inhalation, bright foreground characters swell and pass close to the eye while the dark background stays in place. This parallax, arising on a surface of flat characters, produces an illusion of depth. Following the phase of each breath, the image shifts between sparse achromatic characters, pastel particles close to pointillism, and a dense, fully colored forest. From a distance the screen reads as lush vegetation; up close it dissolves into a decade of weather and the city's green records.
Char-forest asks whether nature interpreted through data and constructed by humans can stand in for nature, and whether such nature can be considered environmentally friendly. When screened on urban facades where commercial images once flowed, the forest does not remain a decorative backdrop; it seeps into the order of the surface, dismantling and restructuring it. Diverging from the expectation of smooth, pleasant greenery, these sometimes unwanted images reveal how an artificially constructed intelligence sees the world, an unfamiliar eye that reads even a forest as arrays of letters and numbers. Measured nature congeals into a single statistical picture, yet that picture, never fully absorbed into the city, asks where the unmeasurable resides.
The work exists in two forms: a generative application running in real time in a web browser, and a single-channel video recording its output for media facade screening.
This work was selected through the open call of the 4th Hyundai FutureNet Media Art Project 《H/ART AveNEW》, and was produced and exhibited as part of the project.
