Office Workers 2023, Co-Work
사무노동자 / Office Workers Deep learning frameworks(SDXL, midjourney), text DB(Custom LLM), Robot arm, dawless equipment, sound generator, monitor, headset, speaker, , table, chair, etc dimension variable, multi-channel sound, 4ch sync video, 35’00”, Resolution: 4K 2023

This project imagines a future office space in which robots have replaced human labor, and stages this scenario in a format that combines installation with performance. The movement of machines carrying out human physical activity in place of humans signifies the robots that will replace human labor force, and by taking the office, the most everyday and standardized space of work, as its stage, the project brings the abstraction of automation discourse down into a concrete scene. Two collaborative robot arms (Neuromeka Indy7) manipulate the knobs and faders of sound controllers, DAWless equipment, and mixers arranged on the desks, and the sound output generated through this manipulation is in turn converted into signals that participate in the generation and transformation of the video transmitted to the monitors. The images and videos flowing on the monitors are outputs produced by generative artificial intelligence (SDXL, Midjourney) using ten major social issues of Korean society as prompts, including low birth rates, aging population, youth unemployment, housing insecurity, labor polarization, suicide rates, climate crisis, educational inequality, regional extinction, and social isolation. The text database based on a custom sLM mediates these social issue keywords and delivers them to the visual generation model, while changes in sound in turn trigger transformations of the image. Within this structure, where sound, image, and robotic movement circulate as if in a closed loop, social agendas are reduced to data and visualized as byproducts of an automated labor process.

During the exhibition period, at unscheduled and arbitrary times, an experimental music performance by a human performer corresponds with the artificial intelligence and the robots. This performance, which occurs at unexpected moments, reveals that the installation appears to operate as a self-contained system but is in fact completed only through the intervention of the performer. This makes visible the fact that robotics does not exist as an autonomous and independent entity, but rather operates through a kind of network mode mediated by its relationship with the human. Instead of the conventional narrative in which automation completely replaces the human, the project emphasizes that even automated systems are continually reconfigured through the contingent intervention of human actors. The moment the performer intervenes in the sound, the images on the monitors are also immediately transformed, and the visual representation surrounding social issues emerges differently each time as the result of negotiation between human and nonhuman actors.

Through this, the project simulates the possibility of collaboration with robots in response to questions surrounding future modes of labor. It leaves open to the audience the judgment of whether the outcome of automation is the mere erasure of human labor or the emergence of a new mode of relation between human and nonhuman actors. At the same time, it also raises the question of what remains and what disappears when the visualization of social issues is delegated not to the critical gaze of the human but to the processing of an automated system. This project is a collaboration by ZER0Byte+x, comprising Youngkak Cho and Hyoungsan Jun, and the two artists have continued to work in their respective ways on visualizing and sonifying the contemporary social impact of technological media, departing from standardized modes of representation. By way of the composite format of robotics and sound media, this work presents the situation in which humans and technology enter into relation not as an abstract proposition but as a sensory event, and brings contemporary questions concerning labor, autonomy, agency, and the modes of mediating social agendas closer to the body of the viewer.
